Pavilion N at the Jewish General Hospital was deserted before undergoing a remarkable transformation into daycare and office spaces. The existing circulation and common spaces were also adapted to accommodate the new occupancies and to conform to current regulations. This included, but was not limited to, a major modernisation to the elevator. The quality of the new spaces does not reveal the many technical challenges that were confronted in this project, most notably the high risk demolition of buildings components containing asbestos.
At the ground floor level, a daycare was conceived in collaboration with Maggie Apollon to accommodate 80 children. The colourful and playful interiors are in contrast to the sober elegance of the workers relation offices on the 3rd floor. These offices and conference rooms are sculpted by the natural light penetrating through the impressively restored over-sized windows.
